Searching for geese in Croatia is one of my favorite winter birding activities. You can really only go to 3 locations, where you are sure to find geese and some really nice birds in general: Donja Dubrava accumulation near Varaždin, Jelas polje next to Slavonski Brod or Kopački rit Nature Park, just a few kilometers outside of Osijek.
(Almost) every year, my friends and I pick a date and head towards Kopački rit. This is slowly becoming our tradition (I participated 5 out of 6 times in the last 6 years in total), and we are definitely planning on continuing it in the future! This day we started fairly early – 6am, and drove 3 hours to Kopački rit. We wanted to see how many birds we would find if we don’t really go nuts, but just do some casual birding. This time, we just wanted to enjoy birds, with no rush of getting anywhere fast.
How many birds do you think we found in ~9 hours of birding? You can check it out on my YouTube channel, the video out now, just by clicking the image above! What is your favorite bird we’ve seen? Let me know!
